What it does

Estimates broadband panel count, first reflection panel placement, bass trap corners, and ceiling cloud recommendation from your room's real dimensions - clearly separated calculation from heuristic recommendation.

Built for: Producers ready to actually buy treatment and who want a sanity-checked starting quantity instead of guessing.

Features

  • Wall area and volume calculation from your dimensions
  • Broadband panel count estimate (editable panel size + coverage target)
  • First reflection point priority panels
  • Bass trap corner count
  • Ceiling cloud recommendation with clearance check
  • Priority order: what to buy first, second, third

What's included

  • smt-acoustic-treatment-planner-v1.0-worksheet.xlsx
  • smt-acoustic-treatment-planner-v1.0-guide.pdf
  • README.md

Compatibility

  • Microsoft Excel (2016 or later) or Google Sheets
  • Works on Windows, Mac, and in-browser via Google Sheets — no installation required

What this does not do

  • Produces a starting-point shopping list (panel counts and priority order), not exact product SKUs or a guaranteed final result
  • Focuses on absorption (panels, bass traps) — it flags where diffusion may help conceptually but does not do diffusion placement geometry
  • Does not sell or recommend specific panel brands
Part of the Studio Acoustic Toolkit. This calculator is also included in Studio Acoustic Toolkit, which bundles all four calculators plus the full guide at a lower combined price than buying them separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will this tell me exactly which panels to buy?

It tells you how many panels of a given size and NRC you'd need to hit a coverage target, and which positions to prioritize first (first reflections, corners, ceiling). Brand and material choice is still up to you and your budget.

What if I can't afford everything it recommends?

That's exactly why it outputs a priority order — first reflections and bass corners first, broadband coverage and ceiling clouds after. Most rooms improve noticeably from the first tier alone.

Does it account for furniture already absorbing sound?

Not automatically — it calculates from room dimensions and a target coverage percentage. If your room already has heavy curtains, a rug, or a couch, treat the panel count as a reasonable upper estimate rather than a hard requirement.
