Slices

Keyboard, with the waveform focused: Left and Right choose a slice, Enter plays it, Shift+Left/Right moves its start, Alt+Left/Right moves its end (Ctrl for bigger steps), S splits it in the middle, M merges it with the next, Delete removes it, + and − zoom, 0 fits. Ctrl+scroll zooms; Shift+scroll pans.

Composer

Pattern

Click a step to put the selected slice on it. Click it again to clear it.

Steps: arrow keys move, Enter or Space paints, Delete makes a rest, R reverses, Up and Down change pitch (Shift for an octave). You can edit while it plays.

Step 1

Direction

Pitch changes the playback speed, like a sampler or tape: higher is shorter, lower is longer. The voice character shifts with it. Nothing is time-stretched.

Generate

Style
Walks through the vocal in order with jumps, like a classic chop.

Generate writes a new pattern. Variations edits the one you have into three related ones. Undo brings back whatever was there.

Export

Pattern A

24-bit WAV at the recording's sample rate. The pattern repeats to fill the bars and the last sound is faded out at the end of the last bar, so it loops cleanly. The export matches what you hear, ignores the Volume knob and applies no mastering. If the render would clip, one gain reduction is applied to the whole file and reported here.

A vocal slicer that follows the voice

Load a vocal and Vocal Studio finds where the syllables and words begin, using the loudness and the changing spectrum of the recording. Move the edges, split a slice, merge two, add or remove one, and hear each as you go. If you prefer a grid, cut at quarter, eighth or sixteenth notes at your tempo.

Vocal chops, patterns and variations

Put slices on a 16-step composer, then shape each step with gate, volume, pitch, reverse and repeat. Five generator styles write a pattern for you: chopped, rhythmic, stutter, sparse and glitch, from subtle to wild. Variations turns one pattern into three related ones, so you can build a section from a single idea.

Made for the track you are building

Chop a house vocal into an offbeat hook, stutter a techno phrase, loop a disco line into a groove or flip a hip-hop sample. Set the tempo, pick the pattern, export a WAV and drop it into your DAW. Everything runs locally, so the file never leaves your computer.

Questions

Is Vocal Studio free?

Yes. Vocal Studio is free, with no account, no credits and no limit on exports. There is no paid version.

Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is decoded, sliced and rendered in your browser. It is not sent to a server and nothing is saved on your device when you close the page.

What can I load?

WAV or MP3 files up to 12 MB and 6 minutes. A dry vocal, an acapella or a stem from the Stem Splitter works best. Make sure you have the right to use the recording you load.

How does the slicing work?

Auto looks at the loudness and the spectrum of the recording and places a slice at each onset: the start of a syllable, a word or a phrase. Sensitivity decides how small a change counts. Grid cuts at 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 notes at the BPM you set. It is signal analysis, not AI, and you can move, split, merge, add and remove slices by hand.

Does changing the pitch keep the length?

No. Pitch works by changing the playback speed, as on a sampler or a tape: a higher pitch is also shorter, a lower pitch is longer. There is no time-stretching and the formants move with the pitch, so large changes sound more like a different voice. That is part of the sound.

What is the difference between Generate and Variations?

Generate writes a new pattern from scratch in the style you choose. Variations keeps the pattern you have and makes three altered versions of it in the other slots, so you can build an arrangement from one idea. Subtle changes a few steps; Wild rewrites much of it.

Will the exported WAV match what I hear?

Yes. Playback and export use the same events and the same rendering code. The export is a 24-bit PCM WAV of the pattern you selected for the number of bars you choose, with no mastering. The Volume knob does not affect it. If the render would clip, one gain reduction is applied to the whole file and the page tells you.

How is this different from the Stem Splitter?

The Stem Splitter separates a full song into vocals, drums, bass and the rest. Vocal Studio takes a vocal recording and rearranges it. Use the Stem Splitter first if you only have a finished track.
