Where Should Studio Monitors Be Placed? A Practical Starting Point

Ask five producers where studio monitors should go and you'll get five confident, slightly different answers. The underlying principles are actually well established — the confusion usually comes from treating rules of thumb as absolute laws instead of starting points to adjust from.

Here's what's actually behind the standard advice, and how to apply it to your specific room instead of a generic diagram.

The equilateral triangle

Your two speakers and your listening position should form roughly an equilateral triangle — the distance between your speakers should be about the same as the distance from each speaker to your ears. This isn't arbitrary: it's what gives you a stable, centered stereo image, with the two speakers arriving at roughly equal level and time to each ear when you're on-axis.

Symmetry matters more than exact distance

A more common mistake than getting the triangle distance slightly wrong is having each speaker sit a different distance from its nearest side wall. Asymmetric placement means asymmetric early reflections, which skews your stereo image even if your triangle math is perfect. If your desk is against one wall and your room isn't symmetric, this is usually the first thing worth fixing.

Get your speakers off the front wall

This is the most common placement mistake in bedroom studios, mostly because desks are often pushed against a wall for space reasons. When a speaker sits very close to a wall behind it, the sound that reaches your ears directly combines with sound that bounces off that nearby wall first — arriving slightly later, and either reinforcing or partially canceling the direct sound depending on frequency. This is called Speaker Boundary Interference Response (SBIR), and it specifically affects the low-mid range: exactly where a lot of critical mix decisions happen.

The listening position "38% rule" — and its limits

A commonly-cited starting point for where to sit is roughly 38% of your room's length back from the front wall, intended to reduce the impact of the strongest front-to-back room mode on your specific seated position. This number gets repeated often enough that it's easy to mistake for a law of physics. It isn't — it's a reasonable starting point from studio design practice, not a guarantee for your specific room's actual modal layout.
